Less than a year after the release of their debut album and with its follow-up, Kinda Kinks, a mere four months old, The Kinks embarked on their first European tour, taking the best of British rock to Paris on 7 July 1965. Delivering speaker-blasting versions of 'You Really Got Me' and 'All Day and All of the Night', they left the Olympia audience's ears ringing well into the following morning. Eight years later, the group were an altogether different prospect when, in the spring of 1973, they filmed a broadcast special for British TV. Dispensing with those two career-making hits as a medley gave the setlist room for some of Ray Davies' finest observational song-writing, including the hipster parody 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion', the ahead-of-its-time 'Lola' and the evergreen anthem for bygone times, 'Waterloo Sunset'.
