Even John Denver himself was amazed at the reception when he touched down in Australia for a week’s worth of shows in November 1977. With the legendary Sydney Opera House too small to accommodate fan demand, the self-proclaimed “country boy” was compelled to return to the New South Wales capital on 3 December for an open-air show at the Sydney Sports Ground. “Blows me away,” he told the 20,000 rapt fans that night as he delivered a set of rousing country-pop anthems and careworn ballads in support of the release of his 12th studio album, I Want To Live. Nothing short of a life-affirming event for all who were there, the show was filmed and later released on home video as Thank God I’m A Country Boy. Now spread across two CDs, the audio recording captures the songwriter behind such hits as Take Me Home, Country Roads, Leaving On A Jet Plane and Annie’s Song more than filling the senses of all who where there.
